Kurt Cole Eidsvig is an artist and poet whose work has been featured in shows like Image for Sale, Stop Traffic, and the solo exhibition Reference Point.

His accomplishments include the Edmund Freeman Award from the University of Montana, an Artist's Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a Fellowship from the Warhol Foundation / Creative Capital and others.

With work in a number of personal collections, publications such as The Boston Globe, The Boston Metro, Boston Sidekick, BigREDandShiny, NewPages, and South Boston Online have reviewed or featured Eidsvig and his art.

He has taught art and writing for institutions like the University of Montana, UMASS/Boston, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

The works from the Storyboard series take inspiration from artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Larry Rivers, both of whom become characters at different points in the drawings. The majority of these pictures are 9” by 12” and are rendered in colored pencil. They play off the idea of comic books, or movie storyboards, and push to take on a new method of representational and popular art forms. Pulled from biographical matter found in What Did I Do, the Autobiography of Larry Rivers, and Phoebe Hoban’s Basquiat: A Quick Killing in art, the pieces also refer to contemporary news sources, literature, and current events. Various Proofs on the Theory of Ice-Nine (Stacking) examines the molecular compound that plays a central role in Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle, and A Complete History of American Poetry (Oranges and Plums) calls back to the writing of Frank O’Hara and William Carlos Williams. There are references to current events, as with Geronimo (Cowboys and Indians), produced after we learned the absurd moniker the US government had been using for Osama bin Laden, as well as meditations on the intersection of art and life, as with Dashiell Hammett at Ashland Federal Prison, or The Concorde and the Taxicab (Moving at the Speed of Color). Each picture attempts to reconsider pop art and its legacy of flat emotional content. And the one exception in medium and approach is Drinking with Miss America which was done in colored pens. All of the works shown here were produced in 2011.

Text Messages are a series of 8 inch” x 10” inch images on paper that use the characters X and O to duplicate the form and display of a wide-range of famous and different textual works. From Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to the cooking directions on the side of a contemporary box of JELL-O, these work employ word processing strategies to render the actual form of common texts while replacing the word content with anonymous characters inserted in a random pattern. Central to this approach is the idea of recreating an image using something other than traditional art devices (fonts and spacing rather than pen and ink for example) and in highlighting the visual information in letters, words, and texts as stand-ins for sound. While visual art is typically seen as a very different genre than words or reproducible anonymous text, Text Messages seeks to bridge that gap. Often displayed together, the pieces here were included in the sound/spoken-word/visual art installation X/O that was created alongside Martin Cockroft and Brendan Murray, and was produced by the Fort Point Theatre Channel in Boston, in April, 2010.
